YNAB Alternative

A YNAB alternative for people who want live bank data without the methodology.

YNAB is excellent if you want a structured envelope budgeting system. If you have been using YNAB for a while and the price increase or the daily envelope discipline is wearing on you, Finsemble is built for the next step: your real bank data in Google Sheets, with a budget tab included, without a budget system imposed.

YNAB
  • Envelope budgeting methodology required
  • $109/year as of 2026, proprietary app
  • Your data in YNAB's system
Finsemble
  • Budget tab included, no methodology imposed
  • From $40/year, Google Sheets
  • Your data in your Drive

Your spreadsheet lives in your Google Drive, where you control it.

Finsemble is a Google Sheets-based alternative to YNAB that automatically syncs bank transactions via Plaid. The spreadsheet lives in your Google Drive, with a budget tab populated from your real transaction data and no methodology imposed.

Envelope budgeting is powerful, but it is not for everyone.

Some YNAB users eventually realize they are spreadsheet people. Finsemble is built for them: real bank data, in Google Sheets, on your own terms.

Live bank data in Google Sheets. Budget tab included. No philosophy required.

Connect your accounts and Finsemble builds a Google Sheet with your real transaction data, automatically categorised, a budget tab showing actual vs budgeted spending, and a complete financial dashboard. You decide how to use it.

Most people overestimate their savings rate by 15-20% because they are working from memory rather than categorised transaction data.

How Finsemble works

01
Connect your accounts

Link your banks via Plaid. All transactions from all accounts appear in one sheet. No manual entry, no import required.

02
Your budget is built from real data

Finsemble populates your Budget tab automatically from your actual transaction history. You see what you actually spent vs what you planned, without entering a single number manually.

03
It stays current without the daily ritual

YNAB works best when you engage with it daily. Finsemble syncs automatically and requires nothing from you. Open it when you need it and the numbers are current.

How to migrate from YNAB to Finsemble

If you have been using YNAB and want to move your day-to-day budgeting into Google Sheets, here is the path. Most people complete the switch in about 15 minutes.

01
Export your YNAB data

Log into YNAB on web, click your budget name in the top-left, and choose "Export budget." This gives you two CSVs (budget structure and transactions) that you can keep as a backup of your YNAB history.

02
Sign up for Finsemble

Visit finsemble.app and create an account. The 11-day Pro trial requires no credit card.

03
Connect the same bank accounts you had in YNAB

Click Connect bank and select your institutions via Plaid. Finsemble pulls 12-24 months of transaction history automatically. Most users do not need to import their YNAB CSV. The bank data becomes the source of truth, and Finsemble's bank sync typically pulls more history than YNAB's export.

04
Set up your budget tab

Either set monthly targets per category in Finsemble's default budget tab (more flexible than YNAB's envelope system), or download the free zero-based budget template if you want to keep YNAB's methodology in a Sheets-native format.

05
Cancel YNAB

Your transaction history is now in Google Sheets, your Plaid connection syncs daily, and your budget tab populates automatically. Even if you stop syncing later, the spreadsheet and all imported data stay in your Google Drive permanently.

If you want to preserve your historical YNAB exports separately, you still can. Most users simply reconnect the same bank accounts and let the bank data become the source of truth.

What you keep, what becomes easier, and what you give up

What you keep:
  • Bank transaction history (Finsemble pulls 12-24 months from your bank, often more than YNAB's export)
  • Your budget structure (recreate categories in 5 minutes, or use the zero-based template)
  • Data ownership (your sheet lives in your Drive, permanently)
  • Mobile access (Google Sheets app, plus Finsemble app for sync status)
What becomes easier:
  • Bank sync (direct Plaid integration without YNAB's connection layer in the middle)
  • Customization (formulas, categories, structure, all editable)
  • Annual cost (lower at every paid tier)
  • Investment account tracking (Finsemble does this, YNAB does not)
  • Net worth tracking (Finsemble does this, YNAB does not)
What you give up:
  • YNAB's specific envelope methodology (you can replicate it in Sheets, but it is not the default)
  • YNAB's mobile app (Sheets app is utilitarian, not designed for budgeting)
  • YNAB's educational content and community
  • Budget balances update during syncs rather than instantly after every purchase

Everything in your sheet, out of the box.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my YNAB transaction history into Finsemble?
Not directly via CSV import. Finsemble's bank sync typically pulls 12-24 months of history from your accounts, often more than YNAB's export. The bank data is the canonical source. If you want to preserve your YNAB exports separately as a historical record, you still can; most users find the bank data sufficient.
How long does it take to switch from YNAB to Finsemble?
About 15 minutes total: 10 minutes to connect your bank accounts via Plaid and wait for the initial sync, plus 5 minutes to set up budget categories. The 11-day Pro trial gives you full Pro features while you decide whether to keep both tools or cancel YNAB.
Can I keep using envelope budgeting in Finsemble?
Yes, but it is not enforced by default. Finsemble's Budget tab uses monthly category targets, which is a more flexible version of YNAB's approach. If you want strict zero-based envelope budgeting, download the free zero-based budget template and use it inside your Finsemble sheet. The mechanics are the same as YNAB; the difference is that you control the structure.
What happens to my YNAB data when I cancel?
YNAB lets you export your budget structure and transactions to CSV before canceling. Your transaction history follows you, but YNAB's specific envelope state does not transfer to other tools. Finsemble's budget tab is built around monthly category targets, which is the part of YNAB that translates cleanly.
What does YNAB do better than Finsemble?
YNAB's envelope budgeting methodology is genuinely excellent for users who want a structured, proactive approach to spending. It also has a mobile app, a larger user community, and more educational content around budgeting philosophy. If you want a system that teaches you to budget, YNAB is better for that.
What does Finsemble do better than YNAB?
Finsemble gives you live bank data in a Google Sheet you own, with a complete financial picture including investments, loans, recurring payments, and net worth. There is no methodology to learn and your data lives in your Drive permanently.
Is Finsemble cheaper than YNAB?
YNAB costs $109/year as of 2026. Finsemble Lite is $40/year, Starter is $90/year, Pro is $190/year. For basic budgeting with one or two accounts, Finsemble Lite is significantly cheaper.
Can I replicate YNAB's zero-based budgeting in Finsemble?
Finsemble's Budget tab shows actual vs budgeted spending by category. It is not an envelope system, but you can set budget targets per category and see exactly how you track against them each month. Download our free zero-based budget template if you prefer that structure.
What does Finsemble cost?
Plans start at $4/month. There is also a free tier. All paid plans include an 11-day full Pro trial, no credit card required to start.
